Habitat

Terrestrial. In forests or damp woodlands with abundant shrubs.

Feeding

Insectivorous in spring and summer, and mainly frugivorous in autumn and winter.

Distribution

Western Palaearctic, being a summer visitor in the northern third of its area of distribution and sedentary in central and southern Europe. In Spain it is well distributed in areas with a Eurosiberian climate, being relegated to humid mountain valleys in the southern half of the country.

Additional information

Unmistakable passerine due to its striking paprika-red bib and apron. The body is 14 cm long, stocky, with a large head that looks as if it has no neck, a uniform brown back and a light-coloured belly. It tends to move among vegetation close to the ground and feed on the ground, where it moves in small hops.
