Distribution
Originally distributed in Europe and the Near East. Almost disappeared during the last glaciation. Its current distribution in the Iberian Peninsula is patchy as a result of introductions and reintroductions.

Additional information
Males with spade-shaped antlers. Reddish coat mottled with white in the summer season, darker and unspotted in the winter season. Very conspicuous anal crest: white, flanked by dark bands and divided centrally by the tail which is white on the dorsal side with a black median band.
