Europe, Asia and Africa. Widely distributed in the Iberian Peninsula, introduced in the Canary and Balearic Islands.

Conservation status

Least Concern (LC) for the two species present in Spain at a global level (IUCN, 2008, 2016). In Spain, one species, the brown hedgehog, is included in the List of Species under Special Protection Regime (Royal Decree 139/2011).

Additional information

Pointed snout. With many barbed hairs covering the body and short tail (barbs are absent in the Asian subfamily Galericinae, which sometimes have long tails).
